An Australian Innovation in Glaucoma Detection and Visual Field Testing

THE TECHNOLOGY POWERING OUR TESTS

Eyeonic was founded in Melbourne in 2019 by A/Prof Simon Skalicky, a fellowship-trained glaucoma subspecialist ophthalmologist with a background in clinical research and software development. The platform converts any standard computer or tablet into a validated visual field testing device, integrating with modern electronic medical records and telehealth systems to support seamless clinical workflows in both in-clinic and remote settings. TGA approval was achieved in 2025, confirming the platform meets Australian Government standards for therapeutic goods used in clinical environments.

Visual Field Testing: Traditional vs. Eyeonic

Conventional automated perimeters have been the clinical standard for visual field testing for decades. They are large, expensive, clinic-bound machines that require specialist maintenance, calibration, and dedicated physical space. For many clinics and patients, this creates real barriers to access and workflow efficiency.

Eyeonic was designed specifically to address those barriers. It delivers visual field testing through a software platform that runs on any standard computer or tablet, without compromising on clinical rigour.

  Traditional Perimeter Eyeonic
Equipment required Dedicated hardware unit Any computer or tablet
Location flexibility In-clinic only Clinic, telehealth, or remote
Setup and calibration Regular specialist calibration required Automatic screen calibration via software
Capital cost Significant upfront hardware investment Software-based, no hardware purchase
Patient monitoring Manual review of printed or exported reports AI-assisted monitoring with structured digital reporting
EMR integration Varies by device; often manual Designed for digital integration
Fixation monitoring Gaze tracking varies by model Real-time AI camera monitoring throughout the test
Validated through research Long-established evidence base Peer-reviewed publications and international conference recognition

Eyeonic is not intended to replace clinical judgement. All visual field results should be reviewed by a qualified clinician. Clinicians are encouraged to review published validation data when evaluating any new testing tool.

How Eyeonic Supports ANZ Clinicians and Researchers:

  • Screen Calibration: Our software dynamically calibrates the screen to ensure light stimuli are presented at the correct angular size and intensity, regardless of the display being used — maintaining consistent test conditions across every clinical setting.
  • AI Monitoring: The device camera monitors head position and eye gaze throughout each test, ensuring fixation and test integrity are maintained. If the patient moves out of position, the test pauses and verbal and on-screen guidance redirects them before continuing.
  • Adaptive Algorithms: Sophisticated algorithms map visual field sensitivity and compare results against age-matched normative values, producing structured data for clinician review in both in-clinic and telehealth settings.
  • Secure Reporting: Clinicians receive an encrypted, detailed report including sensitivity maps, deviation analysis, and a Visual Field Index (VFI) score, structured for integration with electronic medical records.
